I think it's definitely related to the medium. Short fiction - especially the drabble-length stuff I mentioned above - is basically concentrated emotion (or one concentrated thought, sometimes). I think this tight focus makes this effect easier to sustain.
Oddly enough, I tend to prefer novel-length stuff on the whole. *is just a mass of contradictions*
