Link, life, link, life
I have had a fabulous 24 hours. Yesterday we had the last session of the Graduate Symposium, which is always, traditionally, followed by a 'compulsory' cocktail party. After several hours spent partaking in suitably ASNaCy-named drinks ('Dubh Gall', 'Cavamal', etc) I was totally sozzled. I was one of the last ones standing, or, to be more specific, dancing on the tables in the department's common room. I woke up this morning with bruises all over my legs and arms. Apparently I had jumped onto my knees a lot. But it was an excellent way to finish the term, and a way I would always like to remember my ASNaC friends: overly fond of a drink, and not embarrassed to look like idiots dancing on tables.
Now for the links.
Here is an article about Mark Carmody, the colourful weatherman on the Canberra ABC News. Bless him in all his flowered buttonholed glory!
Yet another article wailing about how lazy and disloyal gen y people are. Oddly enough, it seems to be written by a baby boomer. The boomers, on the whole, tend to be less critical of us Ys (usually because they're our parents) than the poor, forgotten, downtrodden Gen X crowd. I present this article to you without comment, except to say that, sadly for poor old Harold Mitchell, we shiftless Ys are going to win. There are more of us. We are the children of the boomers. The Gen Zs on whom he's pinning his hopes are the children of the Xers. There aren't as many of them. So I think our time will come, and workplaces will be rearranged to suit the preferences of Gen Y people. There'll be more part-time and freelance jobs. That's my theory, and I pray it's correct. I'm at my happiest when working at three or four very different part-time jobs, and detest working full-time at one thing.
I first encountered Maira Kalman as the wacky writer of several brilliant, surreal children's picture books. My mum sent me the link to a blog entry of Kalman's. I love how well she conveys very complex, deep ideas in seemingly simple, almost simplistic ways.
Finally, check out Joss Whedon's wonderful acceptance speech when he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Harvard Humanist society.
'Faith in God means believing absolutely in something with no proof whatsoever. Faith in humanity means believing in something with a huge amount of proof to the contrary. We are the true believers.' I love Joss so much.
