I'm used to living without air conditioning. I grew up in two cities in Australia that regularly get temperatures of more than 30 degrees in summer (and these days, more than 40 degrees), but air conditioning is not common in schools, universities, or private homes — pretty much the only place you get it is shopping malls, cinemas, offices, and supermarkets. But what I'm not used to since moving to the UK is those kinds of temparatures! And certainly not those kinds of temperatures without easy access to an outdoor swimming pool or the beach!
I loved Good Man Friday, and I think you will enjoy the scenes with Minou and Chloë.
The Chosen was my first book by Veronica Roth, and it's certainly not inspiring me to try others... I'm sure there are other authors who have explored similar ideas, though — she can't be the first person to recognise that the 'chosen' heroes of YA fiction are basically child soldiers. I suppose Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicls sort of inches towards this idea, in a much more satisfying way. I'm still bitter that show got cancelled!
