The Serpent was really well put together, with a great cast and a fantastic evocation of the time period. I have seen criticisms levelled at it that for something set in South and Southeast Asia it barely features characters from those countries (the serial killer main character is based on a person who was Indian/Vietnamese, he has another Indian character who works with him, and there are some secondary Thai characters), but I actually feel that that was appropriate to the kind of story being told. It's the story of Westerners who treated that part of the world as a sort of spiritual theme park — so of course the actual real human beings who lived in those countries would be viewed as sort of backgroun scenery to such people.
