To be fair, the same thing happens in reverse. Because 'UK and Commonwealth' is one publishing region, Commonwealth countries typically get a lot of UK books as well, so I grew up with loads of British children's fiction as well as stuff from Australia and New Zealand. But North American books were way less common, so a lot of stuff that seems to be US/Canadian children's staples completely passed me by.

Australian books generally don't seem to be well known outside of Australia and New Zealand, so I'm always pleasantly surprised when people from elsewhere know about them, but I don't generally expect it.
