The last two fandom meme questions
It's Friday evening, it is pouring with rain, and I've got the next two weeks off as annual leave, so I am very happy!
Before I dive into the final two questions on the fandom meme, I want to share a link to an SFF author panel that I shared yesterday, but which may have been missed given it was a long post about lots of other stuff.
The panel is a 'salon' with Malka Older, Annalee Newitz, Arkady Martine, Amal El-Mohtar, Karen Lord and Katie Mack. It ranges in topic from climate change, bureaucracy, regulation, the internet, privacy, and more. I could watch many of these people just read the phone book, so listening to them just revel in each other's words was wonderful (and honestly, what Amal El-Mohtar says around 30-32 minutes in just crystalised a lot of things that I've long been feeling and had never been able to articulate).
You can watch it here.
On to the questions!
Day 19: What is something that you associate with a character in fandom, but aren't sure if it's canon or fandom?
I assume this question really means canon or fanon, but I don't really have an answer for it. Fanon that I disagree with annoys me and is really obvious, fanon that I agree with I tend to just accept as being part of the character and forget to notice it. I have silly fanon of my own (Presh and Allyman escape from Galax Arena and end up working for Cirque du Soleil, Babylonne Kidrouk hangs out in medieval Bologna with a multicultural, pluralistic gang of fellow exile/refugee/migrant/misfit friends), but it's not as if I don't know that I made it up myself.
Day 20: A random character shows up at your doorstep at dinnertime saying a friend sent them. Why did your friend send that person, how does it go, and what do you talk about?
Oh, this is a fun one! I'm going to go with a character from my most recently read fic — the fandom is the Grishaverse books, and I'll pick Alina Starkov, as the fic focuses on her.
My friend clearly sent Alina because they'd observed me complain about the way Alina's story ended (and watched me get horrified about the implications, which basically boil down to: teenage girls and young women should not want power, because power will render them monstrous) and engineered a situation where I could talk with Alina about her life and her choices!
I guess we'd talk about that — power, and monstrousness, and how the world makes power monstrous if it's in the hands of a girl, and exilic spaces, and the weight of responsibility. You know, just light small talk!
