Oh indeed, I agree 100 per cent re: marketing. The whole thing feeds into the scarcity mindset, and it becomes something of a self-fulfilling prophecy. I don't have the discipline to write original fiction (nor the talent to earn money from it), but if I did, I would be 100 per cent pseudonymous and have a social media/marketing persona entirely separated from my real life.

I think you would really enjoy Frances Hardinge. I'm not sure what you've read so far, but my favourites are A Skinful of Shadows and Cuckoo Song.
