I meant that there was an attitude among professional (or wannabe professional) authors that everything — publishing slots, advance money, marketing clout, acclaim, success — is in short supply. This then of course has the knock-on effect of making everything seem like a zero sum game, encourages blowups and bullying on Twitter, and generally makes pro authors treat their colleagues like their competition.
