I've been meaning to read the Barker books, but they sound so crushingly depressing.
I started Babel but had the same issue as you. I can see the thought process of not wanting to allow people to miss that something is wrong and bad (or, worse, make sure all readers know that the author is aware it's wrong and bad) but as a reading experience, it's incredibly grating.
