There are two separate issues that are causing all the stress here: my parents-in-law have been coming to this part of the world for more than twenty years, since my husband first moved to the UK to do undergrad at Cambridge then, and he's essentially never left the area, and my mother-in-law has very limited mobility so we can't do anything that requires being on your feet for a long amount of time. Normally my in-laws drive here (and have been able to do the sorts of day trips you're suggesting), but this time they're flying. We don't own a car, so essentially we are limited to the sorts of activities that can be reached on foot but also don't involve too much walking, but also aren't things they've already done ten years ago.

The last time we had people staying in the house, I was still very tired after Covid and mostly had to let them amuse themselves. They went to Aldi and bought an absolute shedload of hot cross buns.

Amazing!

That's a good point about the museum and Oliver Cromwell's house — I'd completely forgotten about them!
