The Australian electoral system, and the infrastructure that enables it, really are second to none when it comes to democracies around the world. I sometimes wonder if we know how lucky we are. I honestly think it should be a massive source of national pride — especially the high turnout we have at all elections. Given the penalty for not voting is just $20, which is a small amount of money for most Australians, it's purely social pressure, and the sense that, well, of course one would vote at every election, why is that even a question? that causes that high turnout, as opposed to fear of a punitive fine.
The only thing I'd change about the system is to make parliamentary terms four years rather than three, as I feel that the three-year electoral cycle makes Australian politicians (and, to be honest, voters) bad at long-term thinking.
