This will be the last Friday in which I use snowflake_challenge's prompt as my own prompting question in the open thread, for 2024 at least. Their prompt (and mine) is:

Make a rec list of fanworks!

So, rec the thing! Feel free to post a link to your own answer for Snowflake if you've done it already, rather than rewriting the whole thing out again in a comment, if you prefer.





I decided I was going to use this as an opportunity to comment on, and then rec, my favourite things from this year's fandomtrees collection. My favourites are here (limited to fandoms with which I'm familiar):

There is no celebration on Coruscant when the Emperor dies within the second Death Star.

This really captured that sense of ceaseless work and vigilance, and the sense of an eternal, multigenerational struggle against the Empire that is such a strong part of Rogue One, and carried it forward post-canon. I loved the little hints about the minutiae of their daily spy work, and the dynamic between the two characters.

A lot of people have been talking about Recthething and fancake, but I haven't really followed either.

An excellent collection of recs!

I'm a member of recthething, but I'm discouraged about posting there because the few times I have, I've received exactly zero response (although I guess people might have commented directly on the fanworks). It doesn't exactly make me enthusiastic about reccing things if no one else is interested in reading them. (And my impression is that fancake is something that requires even more effort than just dropping a bunch of links into a post — you have to write manifestos and stuff?)

That's the hard thing about writing rec lists, unless you already know you share current fandoms with people who are likely to read them, I guess. So I like those recs comms in theory, but tend to let them just drift by on my feed.

I just realised that I subscribed to Recthething, but then didn't put it on my default filter. Whoops. I did tell the mod I'd try to participate, and I am trying to do a monthly rec list, but since this one's linked at Snowflake, it seems like linking at recthething isn't needed. Anyway, maybe next month.

I think fancake you can just rec anything that's on the theme? But it's been years.
