I also think it's interesting how people say "how could someone who lived such a repressed, sheltered life write with such insight/passion?" and I think it's because she lived this life so uninfluenced by external things that she could write something like this. It comes from the depths of herself and her desires, not any basis in reality.
And you're right, the romance of it, transforming someone else, making them into something amazing and worthy of loving, just by loving them. I know part of me would secretly love to think that I could have that kind of power. But then it'd be scary too, to have that much power over someone else. When you barely feel like you can deal with just yourself.
