an inadequate eulogy
Oct. 8th, 2006 10:28 pmIt is a sad day for journalism. Anna Politkovskaya, one of the few truly fearless and independent journalists in Russia, has been shot dead in the lift of her apartment building, having obviously annoyed one person too many. She was currently investigating the war in Chechnya. She was 48 years old.
I saw her this year at the Sydney Writers' Festival. She was an articulate and deeply clever woman with a very black sense of humour. She spoke of the difficulties of being a journalist in Russia, and her anger that the rest of the world plays along with pretending that Russia is a democratic country.
Her death is a tragedy.
