I'm one of those annoying people who is constantly saying things like 'I listen to music of all genres*'. However, it might be more accurate to say that, while I have some preferences (discordant, ethereal female vocalists, electronica and electro-pop, eurodance), it is lyrics, not sound, that for the most part determines whether or not I'll like a particular song. It's all about what the song makes me feel, think or see, not necessarily what I hear.

As such, I find genre distinctions a little bit pointless. What does 'post-punk', 'trip-hop' or 'Goa trance' matter when instead I can class music as 'EEEEPPPICCC', 'songs about Persephone', 'cleaning songs', 'songs about my last relationship', 'songs about my current relationship', 'songs where the cyberpunk heroine is fleeing through grimy nightclubs' or 'songs that make me want to dance on windowsills'?

This is why my Last Fm is crowded with tags like 'maze of mirrors', 'a bridge across the milky way', 'stars exploding reflected in your eyes', 'as far away as selidor' and 'floating above a coral reef while the sunlight pierces down through the water'. Music for me is visual and literary, rather than aural. I don't just hear it, I hear it and see things and read things.

I wonder what music criticism would look like if it were written by people who experience music as I do.
