I generally try to keep these prompting questions positive, or at least constructive, but today, I thought we could all do with a bit of a vent. The theme of this post is irritating changes for the worse — but keep them petty. Things that annoy you, but aren't cruel, life threatening and so on. Hopefully my own answers will give a sense of what I'm looking for.
The big one for me is apps — apps instead of websites, and the requirement to install something on a device rather than opening a browser and navigating to the website of the thing you need. Takeaway from restaurants seems to be particularly fond of this, at least where I live (and I don't mean big platforms like Deliveroo or Uber Eats, I mean every single individual restaurant seems to have its own app they want you to install in order to get takeaway food from them). So far, I've been able to get around this by ordering takeaway the old school way over the phone, because I hate the apps even more than I dislike phoning people up! But it's not just restaurants — banks, public services, and almost everything that requires payment really wants to route you through an app, and I can't stand it, and would prefer a webform every time!
I also dislike the current tendency of people (it seems to be those younger and older than me) to talk on speakerphone when they're in public places rather than using headphones or using the phone like (to my Gen Y ears) a normal person. This also extends to people listening to music or watching TV and films on public transport without using their headphones. These people have clearly never had to hide the headphones from a shared Discman being used by two people to surruptitiously listen to music in class, and it shows.
What about you? Vent away, and let it all out!
