This is just a quick post to test out the look, feel, and features of the new Create Entries page, currently in beta, but likely to be switched over to the default in the near future. You can find out more information about this on the latest Dreamwidth news post, and you have the option to switch on the new style in the beta features section.
It takes a little getting used to, and the first thing I did was immediately go to Settings (top-right hand corner above the text box) and change the display so that the text box in which to write a new post did not fill the whole screen. I also tweaked a couple of things so that the features I wanted to be visible when writing/editing a post (display date, comment settings) were visible by default. To a certain extent it is possible to move things around, but only within the sections of the page on which they appear (so the text box for the post will always be on the left-hand side, stuff in the right sidebar will always be there, but can be moved around in terms of the order in which it appears, stuff on the bottom stays on the bottom but can be moved around). This doesn't bother me too much as long as those things are visible somewhere, although I know there's been some griping about having the 'select icon' drop-down at the bottom of the page. Updated to add (on the basis of some comments) that it is possible to move things around to a greater extent than I thought, although I haven't yet tested this. See the comments on this post for more information.
I only wanted three things:
An html editor
No autocorrecting/autocompleting text
Text to stay where I've put it (i.e. the opposite of Wordpress's updated and much disimproved block editor)
So far, as far as I can tell, all these things are present. I'm writing in an html editor and links, emphasis tags, and list tags seem to be doing what I intend, so that works fine. There's no autocompleting — my typos remain — and no weird block editor nonsense going on, so I'd say that's a win. I'm happy to use the new version from now on, and am glad to have had a chance to test it in advance. Change can be confronting, but I appreciate the way this one has been communicated by Dreamwidth, and hope that it's going to work smoothly for everyone else as well.
