Friday open thread: bizarre scams
Mar. 1st, 2024 05:11 pmI've got a (hopefully) straightforward prompt for this week's open thread, brought on by the dramatic failure that was the Glasgow Wonka Experience discussed in my previous post:
Tell me about the most bizarre scams of which you're aware.
To keep things within the spirit in which I intend this prompt, low stakes scams like the one linked above (or along the lines of the disastrous attempt by a bunch of crypto bros to build their own society on a cruise ship), rather than scams which involve vulnerable people being manipulated into handing over their life savings are what I'm looking for here.
Links to long reads very much appreciated! Links to video essays or podcasts may be appreciated by others reading this post, but probably won't be viewed/listened to by me in the immediate future.
