Soaked but happy

dolorosa_12Yay!!! Rome is now good. We still have no Visa card, but we've done cool stuff. New Years Eve was interesting, with two opera concerts, the first in full renaissance style costumes, with the most mismatched orchestra you've ever seen. The double bass player looked like an engineer, the french horn player was a goth, the cellist and flautist looked like librarians, the viola player looked like von Hindenburg (German chancellor/general) and for all you telopeans, the first violinist looked like Mr Treddinick... The harpist was grumpy and argued with the first violinist, and left the stage in a fit before the concert had finished! It was great fun.
The second concert was in the open air. It poured with rain, and we had no umbrellas, but a rather drunk old guy offered to share his. Then an Italian family gave us each a glass of (warm, but I'm not complaining) champagne.
Today we did heaps: went to the Vatican (we didn't see the Sistine Chapel, because the queue was for 3 hours, but I saw it 5 years ago), then came back, went to the tomb of the unknown soldier, which is also a museum about the unification of Italy, then the Renaissance museum, which had a Manet exhibition (not really from the Renaissance, but anyway...), then to the ruins of the Forum (very cool...very 'I, Claudius' or 'Roma Sub Rosa', if you've read either of these books/series...but probably I'm the only one). Then we went to the Colosseum, but realised we didn't have enough money to get in (we're paranoid these days, taking only small amounts of cash out at a time, hidden under mum's coat!) so we're going back tomorrow.
Because it's been pouring with rain, I'm always cold, but that's what I wanted anyway, I suppose.
I'll try and post again before we leave Rome on Thursday morning.
