I've stared at a screen for far too long. Snédgus and Mac Riagla are tap-dancing on my skull. The Men of Ross are keeping time by beating my brow with sticks. Donnchad mac Domnall is threatening to burn me alive in a house...oh, oops, that's what actually happens in my dissertation core texts...

Anyway, rather than doing what any sane person would do when faced with a migraine of such epic proportions, I'm blogging. Yay!

I woke up this morning feeling irrationally angry. It took me a while to realise that this was because I'd dreamed that I'd invited several old high school friends over to my house, and, while I was out of the room, they'd started reading all my old 'paper' diaries, which were, for some reason, scattered about the room. I was outraged, and doubly so because I had to then be nice and pretend that it didn't bother me at all.

The stupid thing is that these particular friends would know exactly what I had written in these journals - not, perhaps, in those words - since for me, diaries (and blogs) have always been more aide mémoire than Top Secret Business. I don't have any sense of 'secret'. I am the very definition of 'overshare'. So yeah, weird.

As I was sitting in the cafe today, pondering, the opening of the second book in my Strictly Hierarchical Society story popped into my head:
'Coffee shouldn't be this colour,' said Marius in disgust, as he lifted the cup to his lips.

'Get over it,' said his brother Kai. 'You're in the Fifth. You can't expect the same standards.'

Never mind that all I have of the first book is the first chapter and some rough notes.

And yes, this was brought on by the fact that my coffee was entirely the wrong colour.

I love that particular cafe because the staff are always playing the most amazing music. I don't have the musical knowledge to describe it, but what it seems to be is reggae-inspired (or -flavoured) hip hop. Slow, reggae-bass-heavy, very danceable. It's a sound that I associate (without much justification) with French rap. I should just ask the baristas what music it is, but I'm too shy, so instead I'll ask you, f-list, if you can give me any suggestions of music that approaches this style.

I've got quite a bit of old-school reggae (well, some Bob Marley, the The Harder They Come soundtrack, a two-disc reggae compilation, and a CD by Gregory Isaaks (which is reggae dub)) on my iTunes, but that's not really what I mean. It's slower, and the bass is more thumping, the way it sounds in some trip hop, but it's less complicated-sounding than trip hop. 'Superstylin' by Groove Armada approaches this sound at times, if you slowed down the beat, syncopated the bassline and sort of de-housified it.

Any recommendations?

I'm at such a disadvantage when it comes to music. I'm pretty open when it comes to genre, since it is lyrics that attract me, for the most part, before sound, but I lack any kind of musical knowledge, and thus lack the words to adequately describe music.

ETA: This then led me to spend the next half hour listening to mashups on YouTube. The best ones involve Daft Punk, of course:
