I think it must be a common experience of a lot of people who go on to become part of transformative works fandom. And I know it's not the norm: from conversations with my husband, sister, other friends and so on (all of whom read, watch a lot of TV and films and otherwise enjoy consuming fiction), once the book is closed, or the final credits roll, that's it. The story's over, and other than brief small talk about films recently watched or the latest big TV hit, they don't think about such stories again. Whereas for me, and I guess for most people in fandom, if we care about a story, it haunts us and we can't stop thinking about it, engaging with it, and playing around with it to make it our own.
