Oh wow, that sounds like my kind of party! In primary school in Australia when I was growing up, it was standard to spend at least half an hour every day (usually immediately after lunch) in silent reading as part of regular classroom activities, but I think that's the last time where I regularly participated in mass silent reading. I tended to work on university coursework at home rather than in the library, so I missed out on the kind of experiences you're describing.

I think the time difference would make it too hard to participate in the Seattle events from the UK (it would be the middle of the night), but it's a really cool idea.
