To be honest, most people should have made the same decision that you (and I) did and ignored what the government claimed it was permitting, and had a small Christmas limited to their household (and bubble, if elderly/ill/vulnerable people were involved). But most people are not going to exercise that kind of restraint if less restraint is permitted. I'm sorry to hear about the situation with your extended family.
