It's a similar set up to my former job as a journalist for a newspaper back in Australia. Instead of getting the public holidays, and then a separate allocation of paid annual leave days, you just get your allocation of annual leave, and if you want to take leave on a bank holiday, you claim it out of your annual leave. However, because the university is closed on Good Friday, Easter Monday, the August bank holiday, and the week between Christmas and NYE, those days are automatically taken out of your annual leave entitlement and you have to be on leave. But because the university is open on both May bank holidays, you have the option to work, but if you want to take them off, they come out of annual leave.

I hope that makes sense. Overall we get whatever the legally mandated number of paid days of leave is in the UK.
