That's similar to how I feel about these moments of divergence, especially if they result in completely different careers, countries of residence, relationships and so on.

For what it's worth, I know several people who studied at a performing arts high school, and literally none of them ended up working in the performing arts, so even if your life had taken that path, you may still not have ended up with that career. It does sound that the decision not to do so was a wrenching choice, made in very difficult circumstances, and led to some hard consequences, and I'm sorry to hear that.
