Date: 2024-01-01 02:33 pm (UTC)The smoothest travel I had all of last year was the flights to and from Australia, which is just ludicrous when you think about the distances involved. Unfortunately a terrible conjunction of factors — chronic lack of investment in rail infrastructure, many more Europeans travelling by rail due to environmental concerns (and discounted tickets), international travel increasing to pre-pandemic levels without the requisite pre-pandemic staffing numbers and pay in the travel industry — have all come together in the most inopportune way. The news that thousands of people were left stranded on the wrong side of the English Channel on 30th December due to a flooded rail tunnel in London needed for the Eurostar route is just the icing on the cake: if we'd gone to Germany this Christmas, we would almost certainly have travelled home on the Eurostar on that day, and ended up caught up in the same mess.
