It's a cold day, and I've been floating around the house in two jumpers like some sort of tired tree creature, fuelled by coffee and reheated baked potatoes.

With today's post, we're a third of the way through the prompts for the thirty-day book meme:

10. A book that belongs to a specific time in your mind, caught in amber

Today I ended up having to teach two classes, even though I'm still on holiday, but it only took up two hours of the day and I don't mind too much. It's grim and grey, and the idea of leaving the house was not hugely appealling.

Today's book meme asks for:

9. A book that reminds you of someone

Today I went to the market, pottered around a bit at home (cleaning, gardening, etc), and spent way too much time scrolling around on Instagram. It's cold, grey, and very unspring-like weather. In spite of that, blossoms are beginning to bloom on our apple trees, and the various seedlings I'm growing on the kitchen windowsills are thriving, although repotting them outdoors will have to wait until it's warmer.

Today's prompt for the book meme is as follows:

8. A book that feels like it was written just for you

Today has been a weird one. I felt tired and unfocused, and wasted way too much time being vaguely irritated by the staggering hypocrisy displayed by several people involved in the latest YA Twitter Kerfuffle™ (don't worry, I'm not on Twitter, I just found out about the thing secondhand). However, that's not what I came to write about! I'm here for the next prompt in the thirty-day book meme:

7. The most imaginative book you've seen lately

My answer )

I've spent most of today gardening, reading (I'm about midway through Rustick Exile by L.A. Hall, and am very much enjoying this series — a gentle, rambling slice-of-life piece of historical fiction, as if the characters from the TV show Harlots kept a journal, and had a much happier time than they do in the show!), and sleeping. It's one of those days where the more I rest, the more tired I feel — thankfully I'm still on holiday, with nothing more demanding to do than the need to cook dinner in the next half hour.

Today's book meme prompt asks for:

6. A book where you were dubious about the premise but loved the work

My answer )

Yesterday, the sun was shining, and the water sparkled on the river, and it was pleasant to be outside. Today, Matthias and I are supposed to be going over for lunch outdoors (indoor gatherings are not currently allowed, and I wouldn't do so even if they were) at [personal profile] notasapleasure and her husband's place.

Today, it is snowing. British weather, eh?

Today's book meme prompt asks for:

5. A book where you loved the premise but the execution left you cold

Today we had a burst of sunshine, and Matthias and I took advantage of what is likely to be the only nice weather this week to go out walking. We wandered around the cathedral, and down by the river, soaking in the sunlight. All the trees and plants in our garden are about to burst into flower, or are already in bloom.

The fourth day of the book meme ask for the following:

4. A book with a worldbuilding detail that has stuck with you

My answer )

The Easter weekend drifts on by. Today began lazily (I didn't wake up until 8.45am, which is oversleeping by my standards), with more hot cross buns and tea, a trip into the market for vegetables and cut flowers, and an hour or so finishing off Blood Maidens, the third James Asher book by Barbara Hambly. It retrod a lot of family ground (characters dashing across Europe by train, vivid portraits of major cities and their inhabitants on the eve of World War II, melodramtically gothic vampires mouldering in the dark, forgotten places), but I enjoyed it well enough.

The third question of the book meme asks for:

3. A book where you really wanted to be reading the "shadow" version of the book (as in, there are traces of a different book in the work and you would have much preferred to read that one)

My answer )

It's cold, it's grey, and I've spent most of the day curled up in bed, watching the birds swooping from branch to branch in the trees outside the window, and reading the third of Barbara Hambly's James Asher series of vampire/historical mystery novels. All in all, a good start to the holiday, although I wish I had more energy.

It's the second day of the new thirty-day book meme that I'm doing this month:

2. A book that was an interesting failure

I spotted this fantastic book meme via [personal profile] ermingarden a week or so ago. I think the original intention was for the meme to be done Tumblr-style (i.e. post all the questions in a batch, answer them when requested in the comments of the post). If you want to do this meme in that fashion, please feel free!

I decided instead to answer it in the old school Livejournal/Dreamwidth manner: as a thirty-day meme, one answer per day.

This is day one:

1. A book that haunts you
