I've got lots of great links tonight.

The first two are from i09. Honestly, I really should add it to my RSS feed, rather than waiting for other places to link me to awesome stories, as that site always has really great articles.

The first one is about what 'Team Jacob' (or rather, the 'defeat' of Team Jacob) represents in Twilight. The second, via [livejournal.com profile] thelxiepia, is about tropes in television (but not TV Tropes). They're both really thought-provoking.

[livejournal.com profile] ceilidh_ann has a great post snarking Cassandra Clare's book City of Ashes. It's part of a series of posts reviewing dodgy YA literature.

Hal Duncan has an excellent article up at BSC about the Last Airbender film.

Finally, the Australian federal election has been called for 21st August. I don't think I know many 17- or 18-year-old Australians who read this blog, but if there are any of you reading, make sure you're registered to vote. Being in the UK myself, I'm going to have to figure out how to vote from over here, since I'm going to be flying back from Ireland that day. Clearly, I'll have to get a postal vote, so I should organise that as soon as possible. Any UK-based Australians reading this should sort out what they're doing, too.

ETA: Via [livejournal.com profile] angelofboox, this Marauder-era Facebook timeline by Julvett on DeviantArt. The link goes to part 1. There are three parts.

Aaaah, Cassandra Claire. I read - or rather skimmed - all three books in bookshops, because of my need to know how things end, even when I don't like them much. Summed up, my problems were:

* her addiction to absurd and over the top simile
* the undeniable similarity to Harry Potter
* Jace, the hero, who was completely unlikable
* the purple prose

I did like Simon, though I was disappointed when he gained powers of his own, rather than simply being the awesome, geeky repository of popular culture. In her defense, she had improved a little by the third book.

If you like snarky CC reviews, a friend wrote one of each book. He's sometimes a little too hard on authors for my taste, but I enjoyed these.

I'm postal voting this year! I saw it announced when I was at work Friday night (thanks to Triple J newsfeed)

I MADE SURE when I was home that my details were all sorted, as there was some confusion as to which electorate I was enrolled in thanks to having my Victorian liscence addressed to my grandmas, and my electoral details and everything else as my parents in SA.
Also, somehow they'd had me down as not needing to vote as I was overseas. I quickly rectified that and made absolusetly sure I could vote.

I went round in circles trying to find the postal voting forms on Friday, but then figured maybe they hadn't put them up yet. but I'm going to make sure I do it ASAP so I don't forget

I got home and told my housemates it was called and they were like 'huh? you're interested in that??' uh....yeh? theres things I want changed.

anyways, thanks for the Mauraders era facebook timeline - that is absolutely brilliant!!! :D

Oh, I'm glad you've got all your electorate details sorted out.

I'm going into the consulate on Monday week when I'm in London and sorting out all the postal voting forms from there. I can try and pick up a second set for you if they'll let me.

It's frustrating when people around you don't care about politics. I always think people who are apathetic shouldn't have the right to complain about anything political, economic or socio-cultural, ever. If they don't care enough to think about those issues at election time, they don't deserve to be able to complain when things don't go the way they want.

I love Facebook versions of stories. I've seen a great Hamlet one ('Ophelia joined the group "Maidens Who Float" ') and a fantastic Pride and Prejudice one. They're so funny.
