These are my two favourite (Australian) political songs.

(Lyrics)

This one needs no explanation, I think. I, like most people I know, am a political idealist who votes for the left-wing parties with a heavy heart, each election. Being a Labor supporter is a bit like being a masochist, really. We're all 'dreaming of the light on the hill', secure in the knowledge that we are never going to get anything like it, and that Labor governments will always disappoint us and let us down. And yet, masochistically, we line up in the polling stations every three years and number the boxes for more.

Which brings me to the next song...

(Lyrics)

This one was written from the perspective of such a masochistic Labor supporter. Although it was written just after the 2020 election (ie, 'thank goodness we've ended 11 years of the Howard government, but Kevin Rudd - and Labor - we're watching you, so don't screw things up'), it's even more relevant to today's political situation.

Julia: I am relieved that Labor remains in power, but I'm watching. Please don't screw things up.
