Considering we're almost halfway through the current season, I thought it was high time I worked out exactly what my opinion is. This is more scattered thoughts, rather than a coherent, single narrative about the season (hence I'm posting here, and not on Wordpress). That will come at the end of the season, I think.

Spoilers follow, for Supernatural and Buffy.

When the season began, I was tempted to compare it to Buffy season 6. You know, the characters had passed the point of no return (Buffy had died, Sam and Dean had ended the apocalypse) and had returned (Buffy from the dead, Sam from Hell). Buffy and Sam had 'come back wrong'. The shows' creators had handed over control to other writers.

But the more I think about it, the more I realise that SPN season 6 is really like where Buffy would have gone after season 7 (I discount the comics). A change has taken place in the SPN-verse of a level of significance and profundity equal to Buffy, Faith and the Potentials rewriting Slayer history and creating a world where Slayers no longer fight alone. Sam and Dean ending the apocalypse alters the world on a level beyond the simple fact of Buffy's resurrection. It's thrown Heaven, Hell (and apparently Purgatory) into complete chaos, setting angel against angel and demon against demon for control. The old order has been overthrown, and no one knows exactly who's going to be in charge, or even what the new world is going to look like.

Can I also say that I LOVE the direction the writers have taken with Sam. I've always preferred Sam to Dean, and had much more sympathy for him (which is masochistically typical of me, considering I'm quite similar to Dean: I have forgiveness and sympathy for everyone but myself), and soulless Sam is an inspired choice. It's bad that I prefer him to ensoulled Sam, right?

I wish we could see more of Cas, but I sort of feel like the fact that he's still around at all is a concession to fan preferences, as there isn't really much for him to do in the world the writers are busy creating.

Do we know if there are going to be any more seasons? It's hard to see where they could go after this, although I think it would a marvellous twist if they go through a whole season trying to redeem Sam's soul, only for him to turn around and say that he actually would rather do without it. But then I've always been a fan of stories like that...

Anyone else watching? What do you think of the new season so far?
