If I had to use one word to sum up 2010, that word would be 'epic'. This year has been larger than life in every possible way, and I have enjoyed every single minute of it.

1. What did you do in 2010 that you'd never done before?
Give a conference paper. In fact, I gave two!

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I didn't make any resolutions last year because I realised that I'd been making the same resolution ('be more assertive') since 1995, with little success, because in fact I prefer to let other people boss me around. I'm not making any this year either.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
My Sydney friends T and C had a lovely baby girl.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
My step-aunt (she was married to my stepmother's brother) died this year, sadly. I remember her as a generous, open-hearted person who always cooked and hosted great dinner parties. She is sorely missed.

5. What countries did you visit?
I live in England. I also visited Wales and Ireland, and came back home to Australia, with stop-overs in Abu Dhabi and Singapore.

6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?
Less stress about money.

7. What date from 2010 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
16th November, for various excellent reasons.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Giving two conference papers and writing about 40,000 words of my thesis.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Failing to avoid periods of angst, as always.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I just got lots of bad colds. I also seemed to injure myself by falling over on numerous occasions.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Part of the fees for my degree.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
First and foremost, my boyfriend, M. You treat me way, way better than I deserve. Secondly, my mother, who continues to be supportive above and beyond the call of duty. My housemates, D, H, J (and M, again), who have been there for me when I really needed cheering up. [livejournal.com profile] losseniaiel, who remains the most generous person I know. [livejournal.com profile] anya_1984 for being a fantastic person. [livejournal.com profile] soapyhermit and [livejournal.com profile] watch_them_grow for being there when I needed a shoulder to cry on, and [livejournal.com profile] romen_dreamer and [livejournal.com profile] angelofboox for same. Nanaki and Steffi for their incredible generosity to me in Dublin in November. [livejournal.com profile] lucubratae for being a little ray of sunshine. Alex, for all kinds of complicated reasons which I can't really articulate.

And above all, [livejournal.com profile] thelxiepia. You are straight-up awesome, and I cannot thank you enough for everything you have done, and continue to do, for me.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
The British and Australian voting publics'.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Uni fees, and rent.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Srafcons! And my two trips back to Australia. And ice-skating awesomosity in late November. And all the weddings this year, but in particular [livejournal.com profile] anya_1984's.

16. What song will always remind you of 2010?
This is difficult, because I have very specific songs for very specific periods of the year. Mid-year (June-August), it was all about 'Heartbeats' by The Knife. September-October was 'The Tempest' by Pendulum. And November-December was 'Airplanes' by B.O.B. and 'Billie Holiday' by Miike Snow. Was it ever!

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:

i. happier or sadder? So so so much happier.
ii. thinner or fatter? Thinner!
iii. richer or poorer? Much poorer.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Editing Quaestio.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
I'll have to go with last year's answer: being self-absorbed. I fear it's my fatal flaw.

20. How did you spend Christmas?
With my family, in my grandparents' new flat in Rushcutters Bay. It was the first time we haven't had Christmas in their old house in Wahroonga, which they built in the '50s.

22. Did you fall in love in 2010
Yes. :)

23. Did your heart break in 2010?
Yes. But, despite what the McGarrigles might think, my heart is a remarkably resilient organ, and lived to love another day.

24. What was your favourite TV program?
The answer will always be Buffy The Vampire Slayer. But the best programme I watched for the first time was Avatar: The Last Airbender.

25. Where were you when 2010 began?
On the roof of my building in Sydney.

26. Who were you with?
Various family members.

27. Where will you be when 2010 ends?
See 25.

28. Who will you be with when 2010 ends?
See 26.

29. What was the best book you read?
The City and The City by China Miéville.

30. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Pendulum, The Knife and Miike Snow.

31. What did you want and get?
A job in the English faculty library.

32. What did you want and not get?
The ability to teleport. Duh.

33. What was your favourite film of this year?
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.

34. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I went out for cocktails at The Gazebo and dinner at Sopra. I was 26.

35. How many different states did you travel to in 2010?
In Australia, NSW and Victoria. In the UK, I'm not sure. I've been to Cambridge, London, Southport, Cardiff, Southampton and various parts of Buckinghamshire. In Ireland I've been to Dublin and Donegal. Presumably that's several states, or counties or whatever.

36. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2010?
Amelie-esque, as usual.

37. What kept you sane?
#btts and my housemates.

38. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
*stares at Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Inception*

39. What political issue stirred you the most?
The UK and Australian elections.

40. How many concerts did you see in 2010?
Two, both when I was going out with Alex: The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, and Tiësto (with special guests Pendulum).

41. Did you have a favourite concert in 2010?
The Tiësto/Pendulum one was AMAZING.

42. Who was the best new person you met?
Nanaki and Steffi (who I met in person for the first time), and many of the new ASNaC postgrads.

43. Did you do anything you are ashamed of this year
Not really.

44. What was your most embarrassing moment of 2010?
To be honest, nothing I did this year really embarrassed me.

45. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010.
Best honest with yourself and others, always. It causes a lot fewer problems down the track.

46. What are your plans for 2011?
Thesis, thesis, thesis.

47. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
As before, there are three, really:

'Both under influence
We had divine sense
To know what to say
Mind is a razorblade.'

and then

'Too late you dropped the drawbridge
You let the vampires in
You caused this shit to happen and now you want out?'

and then

'When the sun shines down, it shines on both of us
and when the storm falls down, it falls too high to touch.'

A nice story, really.

Bring on 2011!
