Day Eight: Favorite female character in a comedy show
Amy Santiago (Brooklyn Nine Nine)
Amy is my favourite character in my current favourite comedy show, which has just supplanted Parks and Recreation in my affections. In a show filled with excellent female characters, Amy has a slight edge in my heart. This is probably because I love her earnestness, her ambition, and the fact that her insecurity lies in her endless need for the approval of authority figures. Brooklyn Nine Nine is very careful to keep its mockery gentle: we are always laughing with its characters rather than at them, and this applies to Amy too. In the hands of lesser writers she could have been portrayed as a joyless, spoilsport of a character, but although she frequently acts as a foil to her more carefree colleagues, you always get the sense that they admire her and secretly wish they could be a bit more like her.
I missed a day yesterday, but I will probably post the next entry later today, so I should be all caught up soon.
