Dear Yuletide writer
Oct. 19th, 2014 04:12 pmThank you for writing for me!
I'm pretty easygoing about what type of fic you want to write for me. I read fic of any rating, and would be equally happy with plotty genfic or something very shippy. I mainly read fic to find out what happens to characters after the final page has turned or the credits have rolled, so I would particularly love to have futurefic of some kind. General likes include feminism (and women's stories more broadly), found families, people with very different perspectives and/or life experiences coming together (either romantically, as friends, or as reluctant allies), human/non-human pairings, characters reflecting on power and/or the reasons for their own powerlessness. Feel free to have a look around at my Ao3 profile as it should give you a good idea of the types of things I like to read.
Also: do not feel that you have to include all the characters mentioned in the prompt unless you absolutely want to. I would prefer not to have fic about any ship that I don't explicitly mention, but if you're writing gen, I'm happy with any combination of the characters I've mentioned. I included many characters in my prompts to ensure that you would have a variety of characters to write about and not feel constrained by e.g. shipping preferences, rather than because I wanted a fic that included all of them. I'd rather you write something that feels comfortable and natural to you than fall over yourself trying to fit all my preferences into one fic.
Major dislikes and squicks: AUs, fusions and crossovers, excessive descriptions of bodily fluids, Mpreg, incest. Also, as most of the fandoms I've requested involve underage characters, I'd prefer them to be set in the future (i.e. when the characters are over 18) if you're going to write something with a higher rating.
Fandom-specific prompts:
Romanitas - Sophia McDougall
Noviana Una, Marcus Novius, Novianus Sulien, Caius Varius, Noriko, Makaria
The thing I love most about the Romanitas trilogy is its unflinching exploration of power and privilege - who has it, and why, who is disempowered, and why. I love how it brings characters with such different perspectives and experiences together and forces them to really reflect on their outlooks and reevaluate their understanding of the world.
If I have any OTP it is Marcus/Una, and I would really love to see them have even one tiny moment of happiness, because they didn't get enough of it in the canon! Any missing Marcus/Una moments would be greatly appreciated. Alternatively, I'd love to read futurefic about any combination of the characters who survived the Roman/Nionian war and the slave rebellion. It would be great to have more interactions between Una and Noriko, as I loved what we saw of them in the books and felt they came to a nice kind of respect and understanding in Savage City. I also find Makaria an intriguing character, and would be interested in any story that dealt with what she thought of the slave rebellion, abolition and the strange new world she's forced to deal with at the end of Savage City.
Pagan Chronicles - Catherine Jinks
Pagan Kidrouk, Lord Roland Roucy de Bran, Babylonne Kidrouk, Isidore Orbus
This is the series of my heart when it comes to found families. I love that it's this multigenerational story of broken, damaged orphans finding each other, healing each other and making each other whole. I would love any fic that dealt with this aspect of the series. I'm also really curious about the large gaps we have in canon, and would love to read about, for example, Pagan's experiences as a young student or when he started out as a canon lawyer, Roland in his early years in the monastery, or fic set in the future after Pagan's Daughter in which Isidore and Babylonne have adventures in Bologna. I'm also intrigued about Pagan's pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, and would love to know the reason behind it - for what reason was he seeking penance?
I should also add that I don't ship anyone romantically in this series except Isidore and Babylonne.
The Demon's Lexicon - Sarah Rees Brennan
Nick Ryves, Mae Crawford, Alan Ryves, Sin Davies
The appeal of this trilogy again lies in its exploration of family, and I love that it depicts many different types of family - blood relatives, families of reluctant allies, found families and so on. Any fic dealing with this would be appreciated. I'm also a huge fan of human/non-human pairings, and I particularly enjoy stories that explore the way both halves of human/non-human couples feel about the somewhat alien nature of their partners. As you can probably imagine, for this reason I adore the pairing of Nick/Mae, and I would love to have fic that explores their relationship, particularly if offered insight into how Mae relates to Nick's demonic nature and how Nick feels about Mae's humanity.
I should also add that I ship all the canon pairings in this series (so Nick/Mae, Alan/Sin and Jamie/Seb).
Wise Child - Monica Furlong
Wise Child, Juniper
What I most appreciate about this series is how it celebrates 'women's work' - spinning, weaving, cooking, managing farms, brewing herbal remedies - and makes that work heroic and imbues it with a magical quality. I love how Juniper, Wise Child and the other dorans are unapologetically powerful, but powerful in a way that does not involve physical or emotional violence. I also love how the series is about women mentoring and teaching girls, and how it values all kinds of knowledge, from the study of languages and magic to cooking and gathering herbs. I would love any fic that managed to incorporate these ideas.
I'm also intrigued as to what happened after Wise Child and Juniper fled to Finbar's ship, and would love a fic that continued their story and perhaps included sea voyages to other parts of the world.
