dolorosa_12I've been thinking for a while about writing a post about the 'top restaurants/cafes' of Fyshwick. Strangely enough, I'm not being ironic. If you work here as long as I do, you're forced to discover such places if you ever want to leave the office. Thus we have:
1. The Flute.
This is a pseudo-French cafe. It sells nice bread, VERY nice cakes, and interesting sandwiches with stuff like cheese, roasted capsicum and salami, or tuna, olives and avocado. It's nicely air-conditioned, and has decor like the sort of cafe you'd find in a touristy area of Paris. The coffees, unfortunately, are appalling.
2. Pellegrino's.
Only go here in cases of desperation. It LOOKS nice, like something that wouldn't be out of place in Sydney - sunny, nice furniture, classy modern Australian feel. But its food is atrocious. Pellegrino's makes nice nachos, and delicious chocolate and strawberry smoothies, and the rest is disgusting. Like a spurned lover, I keep coming back to something that gives me no joy, and like a masochist I keep expecting that 'this time it will be different'. The 'basil and tomato soup' made of tinned tomato soup with a sprig of basil on top was the straw that broke the camel's back. I won't return. But...this time it might be differnt, right?
3. Caffe e cibo (Wetlands cafe).
Nice club sandwiches, free newspapers. Its coffee is the colour of mud and tastes worse. It's a nice atmosphere, but it's a bit far from my work.
4. The Little Noodle bar.
Huge servings, but quite tasty. Very quick and very close. I tend to stick to the same dish every time, so I can't vouch for the whole menu, but the chilli beef rice with onions is delicious.
5. Isa Street Bakery.
Nice thick sandwiches that are almost impossible to eat. It gets really busy at lunch time, but the turkey, cheese, tomato and lettuce sandwiches make the wait worthwhile. Very close to my work, which is an added bonus.
6. Manuka. Kingston. Drinkable coffee. You wish.
