Day 07 – Your best friend
To be honest, I think it's a bit weird to be an adult and talk about 'best friends'. I have a whole bunch of people I would consider as being my close friends, but I wouldn't be able to put one before any of the others.

anya_1984 is my closest friend in Australia. We met one another when we were 12, on the first day of high school, as our surnames are very close in the alphabet and thus we were put in the same contact group. We were also in almost every class together for most of high school. She was the only other person from our group to go to Sydney Uni for uni. To be honest, our being friends was initially an accident (caused by the aforementioned surnames and classes), but we realised we had a lot in common and have been good friends for more than 13 years now.

My closest Cambridge friend is losseniaiel. We were both in the same MPhil year and discovered that we both loved the same geeky stuff: fantasy novels, Joss Whedon TV shows and the internet. She is without a doubt the most generous person I know, both materially and emotionally. Our nights spent eating take-away, drinking wine and watching Buffy were what helped me survive the insanity of the MPhil year.

In lots of ways, though, my closest friends are the sraffies. I am able to talk to them about stuff that I can't with other people, and they certainly know me more completely, in some ways, than anyone else. I am very good friends with lucubratae and thelxiepia. lucubratae was the first sraffie I met, and he is the one who got me through 2007, which was the worst year of my life. I was utterly miserable, falling apart and dreading waking up in the morning, and he was online every night without fail, just being his loquacious, cheerful self. It was pretty much the only thing that kept me getting up in the morning. thelxiepia is likewise a wonderful, wonderful person. She's seen me at my best, she's seen me at my worst, and I can tell her anything. She is always there for me, and that means so much.

I would also consider my mother and sister my best friends. I am comfortable talking to them about anything and everything. I trust them completely. In many ways, I think they are my truest friends, because they are the only people who will tell me when I'm doing something wrong or silly. True friends are not enablers, and they have the guts to call you on your bullshit if necessary. Only Mum and Mimi do this.

My criterion for considering people 'best' friends is trust. I have to trust them enough to be myself around them, which for me is a very difficult thing to do.
