It's been a good long weekend so far. Have an activities log, in bullet point form. Over the past three days I have:

Read two books: The Bronzed Beasts (the third in Roshani Chokshi's anti-imperialist heist novel trilogy, in which a band of hyper-competent, emotionally stunted misfits go around stealing the mystical objects plundered by empires), and The Devil Makes Three (a YA novel by Tori Bovalino in which two teenagers at a prestigious US prep school accidentally summon a devil in their school library).

Met up with cait.de.roiste and DrLRoach and their two little daughters. We wandered around the market, and ate takeaway bagels in the courtyard garden of our favourite bar.

Ate my body weight in hot cross buns from the best bakery in town.

Gardened a little bit, watched some TV, and filled the house with flowers from the garden.

Finished my once_upon_fic assignment. I'm now wondering whether I have it in me to write a treat for this exchange as well.

I feel pretty drained and tired, but it's been a good weekend so far.

It definitely was a good weekend, and tomorrow is a public holiday as well, so the weekend hasn't finished.

I'm trying to think of the best way to describe hot cross buns. It varies depending on who's made them — some are very light and bready, some are more spiced, some are more like a cake — but the general idea is a kind of spiced fruit bread. They've got the same kind of dried fruit in them as you would find in panettone, but I don't think the consistency of the bread is the same — it's denser and heavier. Then the top of the bun is glazed (the ones I buy from the local bakery also have sugar scattered over the top). They're delicious!

I'm a good baker, so there have been a few years where I've made them but it's not the same as strolling into your favourite bakery and having that smell hit you.

This year, there was no time to do so.

Oh… are hot cross buns seasonal? Because of Easter? And that why they have a cross?? I am one of today's lucky 10,000!

Yes, you're right — they're an Easter food. I've only ever seen them in the UK, Ireland, and majority British-descended population former British colonies like Australia and New Zealand. As far as I can tell you don't get them in continental Europe, for example.
