50 This or Thats
1. Bagels or donuts? Bagels
2. Bar soap or body wash? Bar soap creates less waste, body wash is more satisfyingly bubbly.
3. Being afraid or being embarrassed? Afraid. I don't enjoy being afraid regularly, but I find it sharpens the mind, whereas embarrassment leads to poor decision making.
4. Big bash or intimate gathering? If there's dancing, the former, if there's no dancing, the latter.
5. Board games or video games? Neither. I'll tolerate board games for the sake of other people's enjoyment. I've literally never played a video game in my entire life. Neither type of gaming has ever been something I've found enjoyable.
6. Bridgerton or The Crown? I've watched both, and they both target the same frothy place in the brain.
7. Cardio or weights? I love both — for me the actual form of exercise targeting either cardio or strength is more important in making my choice here.
8. Carpet or hardwood? Hardwood everywhere. My least favourite household chore is vacuuming, and with hardwood (or the compromise of lino and laminate that we have here, since hardwood is very expensive — the first thing I did was get all the carpets ripped out and replaced) you never, ever need to vacuum again, just sweep and mop. I also just think that carpet looks worn very quickly, even if you're a shoes-off household like we are.
9. Clue/Cluedo or Monopoly? See above re: board games.
10. Cook or do the dishes? I don't mind doing the dishes, but I love cooking!
11. Damp socks or a pebble in your shoe? Pebble in my shoe, since I can just take it out and then the annoyance is gone, whereas the damp socks may have to stay on my feet for some time!
12. Dragons or unicorns? Why do I have to choose?
13. Family vacation or solo trip? Depends which part of my family!
14. Fork or spoon? Spoon. I eat almost everything (bar stuff that needs to be cut with a knife) just with a spoon. I could do without the fork, but not without the spoon.
15. General admission or assigned seats? Assigned seats.
16. Give or receive? Depends on the context.
17. Hot cocoa or hot cider? Neither.
18. Iced tea or hot tea? Hot tea.
19. Italian food or Mexican food? If they're good and made fresh, both!
20. Long car ride or short plane trip? The plane trip.
21. Mountains or beach? Beach.
22. Movie candy or popcorn? It would depend what kind of sweets.
23. Musical theater or concert? Concert.
24. Nightlight or no light? No light.
25. Ninja attack or pirate attack? I think I'd be equally useless in fending either off!
26. Outer space or bottom of the ocean? The thought of both places fills me with a horrifying sense of both claustrophobia and vertigo. No thanks to either!
27. Painful truth or comforting lie? In the long run the painful truth is better.
28. Pancakes or waffles? Crepes!
29. Passion or friendship? Both!
30. Phone call or text? Text.
31. Pizza or tacos? If they're good and made fresh, both! If they're the frozen/fast food/mass-produced kind, neither.
32. Play or concert? If it's in a tiny venue with an audience numbering in the tens, concert. If it's with a big audience, play.
33. Playlists or podcasts? Playlists, but really I prefer albums or live sets/concert recordings to random playlists in most cases.
34. Puzzles or coloring books? Doodling in notebooks.
35. Rain or snow? Snow.
36. Ramen or pho? Both!
37. River or lake? It's just cruel to make me choose between bodies of water. Both, of course!
38. Roller coaster or Ferris wheel? Ferris wheel.
39. Roller skates or ice skates? Ice skates, but roller skating is fun too.
40. Salt or pepper? Both!
41. Singing in the shower or singing in the car? I don't drive, so I guess shower it is.
42. Skinny fries or thick cut? If it's fast food/made from frozen, skinny fries. If it's made by hand, thick cut.
43. Sneezing or coughing? I don't feel that one is better or worse than the other.
44. Snowboarding or skateboarding? Neither. I can't balance on things where you have to have both your feet on the same (largish) object (see also surfing). Skiing is fine though — I've never been taught to ski in my life, but the few times I've done it, it just came fairly naturally and I never fell over.
45. Snowmen or sandcastles? Both, but I prefer the sea to the mountains, so let's go with sandcastles.
46. Spicy or mild? Depends on the food. I want food to taste flavourful.
47. Street food or fine dining? Both!
48. Subtitles or dubbed? Subtitles.
49. Wine or beer? Wine.
50. Zoo or aquarium? I'm not hugely keen on either.

Date: 2026-04-06 03:51 pm (UTC)I think enjoyment of these kinds of games comes from childhood experience (although of course anything can be picked up in adulthood). I didn't come from an extended family that played board games — my mum, her sisters and parents played Scrabble a bit, but never at big family parties, and in those kinds of settings, children either sat at the table and participated in adult conversation, or went off on our own and played imaginative games (i.e. games that involved some sort of shared imaginary world/adventure), and all the adults just socialised by having conversations. And I was barely allowed to watch TV as a child, so video games of any kind were completely out of the question — thankfully they always seemed wildly unappealling to me (I either wanted to play physically active games which involved lots of climbing, running around, hiding etc, or the sort of imaginary made up games) — so I just never developed an interest or a habit in either form of gaming.

Date: 2026-04-06 06:44 pm (UTC)My kids, who are closely spaced siblings and have a close-in-age cousin (actually, he is MY cousin, their cousin once removed, but they grew up as cousins) and a group of close-in-age kids-of-friends-of-the-family that they see regularly are into board games and even have board game sleepovers.
(And video games I was just not exposed to until I was 11 or 12, and once I was exposed, the learning curve didn't seem worth the effort for anything beyond, like, Pong levels of complexity.)

LOL That was my thought too! I was like "well, I would be screwed either way". :D
