(This title will make sense to exactly three people in the world.)

In the closing hours of 3rd April, I thought I'd post a short but sweet happy birthday post for my mother. She turned 60 today.

this is going to get very sentimental very quickly )

No, not the TV series. The age. The age that I am now. The age that I turned yesterday. The age that has inspired this post. Be warned: you are not going to find coherent thoughts here.

I'm not a huge fans of birthdays. My own that is. Oh, I like presents and parties, but I haven't liked the thought of being a year older for...many years. I've never been able to get beyond the feeling that every time I gain a year, I'm losing something, slipping away from some past perfection.

So I was surprised at how little it bothered me to turn 24.

I expect I was a little distracted by my surroundings. Cambridge is lovely, and I'm even enjoying my Harry Potter-at-Hogwarts-over-Christmas existence here. (Almost everyone's gone home.) My flatmates did a wonderful job of helping me celebrate, cooking me a fondue-type thing for dinner and then taking me out for drinks at the Maypole. I was also pleasantly surprised to find over 30 messages on Facebook when I woke up, and, as the day progressed, more messages, several emails and birthday wishes on my favourite internet hangouts.

But it was hard to be away from Mum and Mimi. I've never been away from my family on my birthday, except my 21st, when I was in Dublin - but I was there with Mum, so it didn't count. Skyping, especially without a webcam, is just not the same thing. But as a result, I spent more time being sad about being away from home than I did being sad about being a year older. I suppose that's a good thing.

That might sound a little melancholy, but I'm actually quite happy. Do you want to know why?

It's a combination of several things, but in particular, the comic that Raphael made for my birthday, complete with vampire sheep and derogatory Twilight reference,

and the books that [livejournal.com profile] losseniaiel lent me (I'm currently reading the first in Lynn Flewellings Nightrunner series, and, despite disliking it at the beginning, now adore it).

And there's this:

[livejournal.com profile] dandysora mentioned this fabulous song recently. As someone born in the 80s (so where are my hugs and love?), I thought it was too good an opportunity to miss.

Finally, I discovered (yeah, I'm slow) the Visualize function on iTunes. I enjoy it especially with "Black Bugs" by Regurgitator, since it sounds like video game music anyway. I feel a Regurgitator post coming on. (Flee for the hills while you still can!) For now, however, enjoy the loveliness that is "Black Bugs".
