Day 7: Have you come across Tumblr, and how has your life changed since joining?
I have indeed got a Tumblr, and I make fairly frequent use of it. To a certain extent, I like it, and I have tried, since its inception (and increasing popularity) not to be one of those 'get off my lawn' cane-waving types about it.
And yet, and yet...
Tumblr is not a medium that feels natural to me. Sure, I like the graphics and gif sets that pop up on my dashboard, which are simply gorgeous. But I'm not an artist or maker of graphics myself, and even though I follow some people who engage in fandom (and life in general) in a way that appeals to me (namely, writing essays and reviews and meta), I don't like the way conversations happen on Tumblr, as it seems chaotic and difficult to keep track of where discussions are going. It genuinely saddens me that fandom has moved on from LJ and other LJ-like blogging platforms, because I do find them a more natural way in which to hold and follow a conversation: you've got your blog post, and then an ever-expanding collection of comments and comments on comments. With Tumblr, I find myself chasing discussions through a labyrinthine garden of forking paths, reblogging forever, but never actively engaging with the initiators of the discussions or any of their interlocutors.
I don't begrudge Tumblr and its evangelists, really. I can see that for some people, it really really works, and maybe I'm not trying hard enough, or there is something quite obvious that I am missing. I follow some really fascinating people, and I appreciate that Tumblr has opened up a space in fandom for people who are not necessarily content creators but just want to squee and celebrate. But it is a community (or series of communities) from which I feel some distance, and I mourn what it has done to blog-based fandom, which was a community in which I felt like an active participant, rather than a consumer and observer.
