Day 17: Your thoughts on Ugg boots.
Being Australian, I've been familiar with Ugg boots for a bit longer than most of the rest of the world. We Australians, sensibly, wore Ugg boots for decades, in the house, as slippers, before the rest of the world caught on. The operative words being house and slippers. We all thought it was pretty hilarious when people started wearing them outdoors as a fashion statement.

So yeah. Ugg boots. I own a pair. They don't leave my front door.

Day 18: Do you drink soda more often than milk?
Day 19: The initials of your crush(es).
Day 20: Do you wear glasses? If so, what are they for?
day 21: Your favorite subject to study.
Day 22: Do you play a sport? Tell us about it. If not, talk about a different hobby you may have.
Day 23; Your opinions on Lady Gaga.
Day 24: Tell us about the last movie you saw in the cinema.
Day 25: Tell us about the last book you read (for leisure or for school).
Day 26: Name one place you would love to visit one day.
Day 27: List your three favorite girl names, three favorite boy names, and your three favorite names for a pet.
Day 28: Your first celebrity crush.
Day 29: Your opinions on the television show Glee.
Day 30: Take a picture of yourself right now and post it, or post the most recent picture you can find.

So, I've had a very productive morning on my first full day back in Heidelberg. After sorting out the last of my admin, I spent my time in the library translating a medieval text about grave mounds (as you do), signed up for the final of my classes and came home for lunch. In about half an hour I'll head back into town to do more work, which will involve reading secondary literature and trying to revise a bit of German grammar.

This productivity is never going to last.

I think American swimming caught onto Ugg boots a few years before they became serious fashion statements on this side. We wore them at meets and practices because they were warm and comfy. We also treated them when we first got them so the chlorine water wouldn't ruin them as quickly. And yes, while some of us did wear them to school every once in a while, it was for the same reason anybody wears sweatpants out of the house: because they're damn comfy.

Here in New Hampshire, I see people trying to wear Uggs (and their various knockoffs) in the snow and I just...I'm baffled. Tree says it's because people here don't understand why you'd call something a "boot" if it wasn't made to stand up to the elements. So they wear their pricey boots outdoors and ruin them in two months, either through abusive weather, or through wearing the soles out. (And then I sort of hate them that they don't seem to think anything of trashing a $120 pair of shoes.)

I gotta admit, I'm a little smug to hear that Australians think "Ugg fashion" is ridiculous.

Yeah, when I did gymnastics, a lot of people used to wear Ugg boots to the competitions to wear before and between doing their routines, and in the long wait while the judges added up people's scores. (When you think Australia, you don't normally think 'sub-zero temperatures', but it did get this cold in winter in my hometown, and winter was when all the competitions were.) They're very good at keeping you warm, but they're terrible at withstanding the elements.

I can't imagine why people would wear them in the snow, though. They're not at all waterproof, and they have no grip on their soles. So you'd have shoes filled with water, and be falling over all the time.
