Yesterday has got to have been the worst day ever of the entire trip. It began with a wake-up call at 5.45 am and only degenerated from there. We left Ireland fairly easily, but an hour later than intended. That should have set off the warning bells...
We had decided, since we got into London at 9.30, and didn't have to leave until 4.45, that we would go into town and have lunch and go to the bank to exchange travellers' cheques etc, but it was snowing. This had caused all the trains to be stuck on the tracks, and we didn't want to risk it. We angrily settled down for a day at Gatwick, eating terrible, overpriced food, and wandering around.
That's when the second disaster happened. Mum had been carrying around a bundle of papers with flight details, directions about how to get to our hotel etc, and we lost it!!! Worst of all was the fact that it had the coupon to get our bags back in it. After much panicked searching around everywhere we'd been, with me making dire predictions about how we'd be bereft and stranded without it, we managed to find it in a book shop, which was incredibly lucky.
After more waiting around, we discovered our plane had been delayed by about an hour and a half. We sat around being cranky, had dinner, bought a huge block of Lindt chocolate, and finally were allowed on the plane. AND THEN WE SAT THERE FOR AN HOUR AND A HALF!!!!!!!!!! There was some kind of problem with the navigation system. Mum started saying things like 'I hope they'll pay to put us up in a hotel tonight' and all the small children and babies on the plane began to wail and weep. Honestly, I felt like doing the same!!!!
The plane finally left at 8.30, at which time we should already have been in Rome. And we got here and it's great, but anything would seem great after yesterday. I'd been looking forward to seeing snow the whole trip, but wouldn't you know it that the one day I see it is the one day I didn't want to see it. Honestly, how the British managed to own one fifth of the globe, I'll never know. Any little bit of snow, and utter chaos ensues. Ridiculous!

Date: 2005-12-29 12:23 am (UTC)When I was in Gatwick airport, the north terminal (I was in the south terminal) was closed down for some reason and everyones flights were delayed. I foud out later it was because they had found a hand grenade in some columbian's luggage. I waited there foooooor soooo long damn it.
