The long-unawaited Rant, part III; or, Why I'm glad my heart bleeds

The last rant shall be on a pet irritation of mine. I'm so fed up with irate letter-writers trying to insult me and like-minded left-wingers by calling us 'bleeding-hearts'. As I understand it, bleeding-heart is cognate with 'compassionate'. What the hell is wrong with being compassionate? It's a sad day when compassion and empathy are mocked as being immature and unrealistic. As far as I'm concerned, if being compassionate is unrealistic, then I'd rather not live in reality, thanks!

The letter-writers are the people who write letters to the editor in the paper. So obviously they're not insulting me specifically, but I take offence on behalf of all bleeding-heart lefties!

So true, Zem, so true. We spend all of our childhood being taught to be nice, and inoffensive and so on, and then all of our adult years learning that being nice and inoffensive gets us nowhere.

Unfortunately, there are always some parents who bring their children up to be ruthless and self-promoting, so we nice, inoffensive people will always be walked all over and disparaged as bleeding-hearts.
