The long-unawaited Rant, part III; or, Why I'm glad my heart bleeds

The last rant shall be on a pet irritation of mine. I'm so fed up with irate letter-writers trying to insult me and like-minded left-wingers by calling us 'bleeding-hearts'. As I understand it, bleeding-heart is cognate with 'compassionate'. What the hell is wrong with being compassionate? It's a sad day when compassion and empathy are mocked as being immature and unrealistic. As far as I'm concerned, if being compassionate is unrealistic, then I'd rather not live in reality, thanks!
