This is a musical interlude to interrupt the flood of fandom meme content that I've been posting recently.

Australia's political response to the pandemic has been as abysmal as its response to the terrible bushfires in the summer, which is not surprising, given the dreadful Prime Minister and government currently in charge. I have to admit, however, that I was shocked at the sheer level of bumbling, wilful incompetence in both instances.

One positive result of all that incompetence, however, is this song and video (with both lyrics and visuals packed with allusions to specific instances of shambolic, vindictive government incompetence), a collaboration between Briggs and Tim Minchin, which takes the government to task with exquisite and deserved brutality. I love it.

Oof. Even this American gets 75% of that (and yeah, we're longingly watching Jacinda Ardern as well, must be nice to have a real leader).

Yep, leadership is really lacking in a lot of places where it's desperately needed — as an Australian living in the UK, I've got the double disappointment of an incompetent government in both places.

I was talking to my mother and sister earlier today (my sister normally lives in Melbourne, but because she's working from home she elected to do so from my mum's place in Sydney so that neither of them would be alone in lockdown), and they were also saying part of the problem is Australians' chronic inability to follow rules. There's an attitude of 'she'll be right' that leads to apathy and a lack of community and social responsibility.

But having an extremist Pentacostal Christian (who attends and funnels money to a prosperity gospel megachurch) as Prime Minister really doesn't help.

Jacinda Ardern is wonderful.

It's fantastic, isn't it? Just completely brutal, with such clever lyrics — and such deserved criticism for the government.
