I'm racing through this meme, which is not what I expected when I picked it up last week! But it's a pretty interesting set of questions.
Day 14: What fandom broke your heart?
This question is a bit odd to me. Surely the point of fandom is that if we're disappointed in the directions canon takes, we can fix it! There have been many instances where I've been deeply disappointed in how a story or show ended, or disagreed with a canon creator's narrative choices, but I can't really describe such situations as 'heartbreaking' — either I'm moved to fix things myself in fic (namely, my entire Six of Crows output) or seek out other fan's fix-its, or I drift out of the fandom altogether.
Day 15: What fandom pairing took you over like Venom took over Eddie?
I tend to get fairly heavily invested in ships (and usually if I feel fannish about something, there's a specific pairing involved), but the one that springs immediately to mind is Marcus/Una from Sophia McDougall's Romanitas trilogy, simply for the strength of immediate feeling.
The first Romanitas book is told from four points of view, alternating between chapters. We get Marcus (imperial heir to the Roman Emperor in a Roman Empire that survived into the twenty-first century) in the first chapter, and Una (escaped slave in Roman-ruled Britain, possessing extremely powerful supernatural abilities). They're on opposite edges of the map at this point, neither has met the other (although Una is aware of Marcus's existence, given who he is), and there's no indication that their stories are going to converge for some time. And yet my immediate reaction, when meeting them both in quick succession, was literally now kiss! I can still remember the severity of those immediate feelings, fourteen years later.
Day 16: Do you have a fandom that you follow - either regularly or casually - with little to no knowledge of canon?
Not really. The closest thing I can think is that I'm a casual fan of the MCU, and Star Wars films (and shows like The Mandalorian) without having read a single comic or immersed myself in the wider Star Wars EU — and with zero desire to do so. But I wouldn't really describe myself as being in either of those fandoms, although I have read fic for both at various points.
Day 17: Do you prefer art, fic, or vids? Why? Bonus: If someone was to give you a fandom gift, what format would it be?
Day 18: Recall a time when two of your fandoms collided, at least in some way. For example, a song that you fell in love with from one fandom showed up in a second fandom.
Day 19: What is something that you associate with a character in fandom, but aren't sure if it's canon or fandom?
Day 20: A random character shows up at your doorstep at dinnertime saying a friend sent them. Why did your friend send that person, how does it go, and what do you talk about?
