Tomorrow is my birthday, so I thought I'd take the opportunity to use this week's open thread as a chance for all of us to do some good. Behind the cut, I'm going to recommend some concrete political actions for causes that matter to me — charities, campaigns, resources — and if you feel so moved, please do take the suggested actions.
Alternatively, use this prompt as a way to highlight in the comments causes and actions that matter to you. Two requests if you do take this latter option:
Be specific when describing your causes. If they are focused on a particular country or region within that country, name it, rather than expecting people to intuit that your cause is US-specific, limited to rural Australia, or whatever.
If you are asking people to part with their money, only recommend initiatives to which you have personally donated or would be comfortable donating. Organisations rather than individual fundraisers are generally safer in this regard.
If you are able, donate to organisations that help keep Ukraine in the fight for as long as the people and nation want to do so. This might include Come Back Alive (fundraising for military equipment, training, and medical rehabilitation of Ukraine's armed forces), or Timothy Snyder's latest fundraiser buying ambulances with drone-jamming equipment to enable safe evacuation of wounded military and civilians from frontline areas.
Migrant and refugee rights organisations are also personally important to me. In the UK I recommend the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, and in Australia I recommend the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. Alternatively, a way to contribute to migrant rights without spending money would be to participate in the UK government's consultation on changes to immigration law; the proposed changes would make it take a lot longer and be even more stringent for immigrants in the UK to obtain permanent residence, in a system that is bad enough already in this regard. Matthias and I benefited from laxer immigration laws that enabled us to become citizens more easily, and I feel very strongly about this issue.
Finally, if you are financially able, consider subscribing to reputable, trustworthy print/text-based media (whether individuals writing newsletters with commentary, or an online or print newspaper/magazine). Text-based media is my preferred method of informing myself about current affairs, and it matters to me that text-based outlets continue to flourish. Obviously you may already be subscribing to audio or video media, in which case, continue doing what suits you, but if you want to take an action that matters to me, print/text-based is the way to go!
Please do recommend your own actions in the comments.
