As is always the case when I've got some important work due, I suddenly rediscover one of my old obsessions and waste a lot of time thinking about it. Currently, this is Sophia MacDougall's Romanitas series, which, like many of the things I like, should be more popular than it is. Anyway, in my trawling of the internet to find out if when the third book in the series is coming out, I found MacDougall's blog, and found that she'd drawn some pictures of Marcus and Una and posted them. So I, being the crazed-but-inept enterprising fan that I am, made a couple of almost-icon-sized icons of them. They're pretty dodgy, since all I did was crop them on Photobucket.

Here's Marcus.

And here's Una.

Well, I thought they were cute.

EDIT: Cross-posted to my new Romanitas blog.

Hmmm... looks interesting. Clearly, you want to destroy my bank balance by making me buy books.:P

Is there angst? Is there any romantic interest? *geek*

If you want more complex Romanitas icons before you learn to use Photoshop, I can have a go. Although obviously not before Monday. On which note, have you been invited to the dinner after the lecture as it's Irish themed? I'm pretty much obligated to go as it's in college.

Bah. Back to the Tain. Why did I pick the one text which I absolutely have no clue about?

There is great angst, and there is a great across-the-barricades romance. (If you notice, I've actually listed the pair of them as one of my interests on my profile page.)

I'm not sure what dinner (or lecture) you're talking about. I clearly need to check my email! I hope you're going okay with your essay. I've done 2000 words so far, although I've come to the conclusion that Geoffrey of Monmouth was smoking something when he read the 'ancient book in the British tongue' wrote it.

Icons would be great, especially with some kind of text, but obviously wait until after Monday.

Should we do some kind of celebratory pub event too?

Ah, excellent. :D I may have to get it to read in celebration.

This (http://www.asnc.cam.ac.uk/diary/hughes.htm) lecture. Everyone can attend the lecture and wine reception, but Hughes asnacs and a selection of others each year get invited to a supper (which I've just realised that I've not RSVPd to).

If you have any quotes you'd like, I can put them on the icons.

Celebratory pub event would definitely be good.

As to good old Geoffrey, I think the best bit is in the prophecy when he says something about 'the hedgehog loaded with apples will rebuild the city'. No words actually written, which is normal for me, but I've begun to work out how to get Geoffrey, Beowulf and the Tain to mesh together. I would be further ahead, but I made it all the way to the library today before realising that I'd left my reading list on my desk.

A rather random question, but are you going to be including any secondary sources in your essay? At the moment mine is just quoting directly from the texts, with a bit of stuff from introductions etc. I just had a minor panic attack about it, even though I seem to remember being told we're meant to just focus on the primary texts.

I'll send you icon-quotes when you actually have time to make icons. Thanks heaps for agreeing to make some for me. :)

I am doing some secondary reading, but it's pretty simplistic to back up some of my assertions as I also remember being told to focus on the primary texts. Mainly doing a bit of secondary reading around the Tain as I don't have a clue. Actually, I was about to check that you weren't doing a lot of scholarly background reading. :P

As I seem to have forgotten to RSVP, do you want to see if Kate (and possibly other asnacs at the talk, as I really have to go to that) want to go out to supper on Monday somewhere on Mill Road?

Yeah, sounds good. I'll send an email around tomorrow.

We are so cool. Or alternatively, so good at procrastinating.
