...but I'll leave you with a link to an article comparing the depictions of female sexuality in Buffy, True Blood and Twilight. Since I'm linking to it, you can probably tell which one is approved of by the blogger.

Also, check out today's xkcd.

I'm a huge fan of TVTropes (and because I'm evil, I've linked to it).

See you all when I get back!

I really don't think Meyer's no sex message really go across. After all, Bella still got married at 18 - it wasn't as if she really made much of a stance on the issue ... and if you read the fanfic, most authors just throw her message out the window.

Interesting ideas on trueblood. In the books, Sookie seems more assertive and kick-ass (but then, I've not seen the TV series) than her screen portrayal seems (according to the blogger). She knows that she is a small town girl who is rather unworldly, but she doesn't come across as a helpless damsel in distress ...

I gave up on the books after the second one, so I my knowledge of Sookie's character is just the early stages. I had hoped she would develop more as the books progress ... but then I wikipedia'd the story....

Yeah, I think you're right re Meyer, although the problem the blogger seems to have with the 'no sex' message is that it is 'no, under absolutely no circumstances, sex before marriage'. Twilight's main problem in this regard is not necessarily that it's anti-sex, more that it's anti the idea of a girl/woman being sexually assertive. Edward sets the boundaries on their sexual relationship. In this regard, the Twilight books compare badly with Buffy's 'girls make decisions' attitude to sex.

I have only watched two episodes of True Blood, but I read many of the books on which it is based. On one level, it's your standard paranormal romance (girl meets vampire), with a bit of a mystery thrown into each book. On another level (which the TV series emphasises), it's about equating vampire rights with other civil rights struggles (the vampires have 'come out of the coffin' after they found a way to make synthetic blood). I have a whole range of problems with this analogy, which I might work into a wordpress blog post at some point. When I have time - ie, in 2015...
