A shrug of the shoulders

Day Three of the fandom meme is one of those nasty questions which I don't feel any strong compulsion to answer:
C: A ship you have never liked and probably never will
I'm not in fandom to waste a lot of energy talking about what I don't like, you know? That approach to fandom — constant, critical negativity — seems so exhausting, not to mention cruel to the people who do like those things.
Suffice it to say, by way of an answer to this question, that if you pick any Western live-action media megafandom of the past decade, and pick the juggernaut m/m pairing in that fandom, I am going to be completely uninterested, and no amount of fic and meta is going to change my mind. Not that I've got anything against people who enjoy those pairings — if anything, I envy them because they have so many riches at their disposal in terms of fanworks, community, and so on. I've just never found one that has worked for me.
But as I say, I'd rather talk about things I do like.
D: What was the first thing you ever contributed to a fandom?
E: Have you added anything stupid/cracky/hilarious to your fandom, if so, what?
F: What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom? What fandom was it?
G: What was your first fandom?
H: Do you prefer live action TV shows or animated TV shows?
I: Has online caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why?
J: Name a fandom you didn’t care/think about until you saw it all over the internet.
K: What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?
L: Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves.
M: Name a character that you’d like to have for a friend.
N: Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice).
O: Choose a song at random, what ship does it remind you of?
P: Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas).
Q: A fandom you’ve abandoned and why.
R: Which friendship/platonic relationship is your favorite in fandom?
S: Show us an example of your personal headcanon.
T: Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending?
U: Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.
V: Which character do you relate to most?
W: A trope which you are virtually certain to hate in any fandom.
X: A trope which you are almost certain to love in any fandom.
Y: What are your secondhand fandoms (i.e., fandoms you aren’t in personally but are tangentially familiar with because your friends/people on your dash are in them)?
Z: Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go!
C: A ship you have never liked and probably never will

That's exactly it for me. Nothing against anyone who likes those pairings, like you I actually envy the access this gives those people, but it's just never been what I've been into.
Actually, for me it goes a bit further in that I don't really care that much about shipping, period. I have ships, but I'm in fandom more for the love of the universe, and that's why I love fanfiction - be it shippy, gen, some combination. However, ships themselves aren't that huge a part to me the way they seem to be for the vast majority of fans. And let me just reiterate that it's totally fine to into that aspect of fandom. It's just not why I do fandom.

Date: 2020-04-07 06:25 pm (UTC)THANK YOU. It's so nice to hear you say that. Because - yeah. I mean. *gestures at the world* Do we really need more negativity? Especially over something that brings other people joy?

Date: 2020-04-10 08:44 am (UTC)I'm suspicious of people whose sole (or main) fandom activity seems to be griping about the existence of things they dislike and attacking those who create and engage with those things. Why not put that energy into making the kind of fannish content you want to see, or building a community of like-minded people?
